OpenGate Weapons Detection System
Dear Barren County Families,
At Barren County Schools, the safety and well-being of our students and staff are always a top priority. We continuously evaluate and strengthen our security measures to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment. As part of our ongoing commitment to school safety, we are adding the OpenGate Weapons Detection System to Barren County High School and Barren County Middle School. Our goal is to have the system fully installed and staff members trained before the end of the second semester.
This system is a proactive measure designed to complement the many safety initiatives already in place, including:
• School Resource Officers (SROs): Trained law enforcement professionals providing security and relationship-building with students.
• Mental Health Support Services: Licensed therapists are available to students who are struggling; mental health screeners that help us identify students in need of support.
• Anonymous Reporting through the STOP Tip Line: A confidential tool for students and families to report safety concerns.
• Controlled Access with Magnetic Door Locks: Ensuring secure entry points during school hours.
• Regular Safety Drills & Emergency Preparedness: Equipping students and staff with the knowledge to respond to potential threats.
How the OpenGate Weapons Detection System Works
The OpenGate Weapons Detection System uses advanced electromagnetic field technology to detect weapons. Unlike traditional metal detectors, the OpenGate system allows individuals to walk through without stopping, removing items, or going through searches. This technology is already used at large public events such as concerts, sporting events, and amusement parks.
Each morning, students will walk through the OpenGate system as they enter school. A staff member will supervise each point of entry, and some items will need to be passed around the system, including instruments, three-ring binders, tablets, Chromebooks, and laptops. If the system detects an abnormal object, a visual and audible alert will sound. At that point, the individual will be asked to place their carry-in items on a nearby table and walk through the scanner again. If the student successfully passes through, staff will check the items placed on the table.
If the individual fails to pass through the system a second time, a school administrator or school resource officer may conduct a search of the student.
Our Commitment to Safe Schools
We will continue to assess and enhance our safety measures to ensure that every student in Barren County Schools has a secure place to learn and grow. We recognize that the most effective way to keep our schools safe is through a strong partnership with our families. Open communication, reporting concerns, and working together to support students’ mental and emotional well-being are all critical to maintaining a safe learning environment. We can’t thank you enough for your support.
In service,
Amy Irwin

A soft launch begins April 3rd with small groups of students. Our goal is to have it fully implemented at the start of the 2025-26 school year.

What if a student accidentally brings a prohibited item?
They should tell a staff member before entering.
Does OPENGATE affect medical devices?
No, but students with concerns should inform school staff.
Is OPENGATE safe?
Yes. It uses harmless detection technology and does not store personal data.
Is OPENGATE the only security measure?
No, it’s part of a broader safety plan that includes SROs, cameras, secure entry points, the STOP Tip Line, and student support services.
